Description

Organic French Red Shallots (lb)

Grow French red shallots for copper-red skins, pink-purple flesh, and a mild onion flavor with a hint of garlic. These organic shallots multiply into clusters, bringing a harvest to your kitchen garden. Slice them into dressings or cook them in sauces and roasts.

Variety Details

  • Type: Allium cepa Aggregatum Group, also described as Allium cepa var. aggregatum.
  • Format: French red shallot sets sold by the pound.
  • Appearance: Pear-shaped bulbs; cluster size varies.
  • Comparison: Distinct from the French grey shallot.

Looking for French red shallot seeds? This product supplies planting bulbs, not true shallot seeds. Each planted set can form a cluster of red shallots.

Planting & Growing

Plant French red shallot bulbs in full sun. Before planting shallots, loosen the soil and add compost for organic matter. A raised bed can help where drainage is poor.

Fall is the listed planting time for this product. Early spring planting may suit some regions; follow local guidance. Set bulbs with tips near the surface.

Shallots prefer well-drained soil. Because they are shallow rooted, weed gently and water during dry spells. Shallots require room for clusters to expand; crowding can limit growth. Large bulbs are not guaranteed.

Harvest & Storage

When growing shallots, watch foliage from early summer onward. Harvest when leaves have turned yellow and fallen, usually around mid-summer for this variety.

Cure shallot bulbs until dry, then store in mesh bags with good airflow in a cool dry place.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date). For qualifying claims involving perishable items that arrive in substandard condition, we will provide a refund of the affected item’s purchase price, excluding shipping costs. At our discretion, we may offer a replacement instead, subject to product availability and shipping feasibility. You may accept the replacement (if we are able to offer one) or receive the refund. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
