Description
Description
Grow organic Padron pepper seeds for the small Spanish peppers traditionally served as tapas. This heirloom, open-pollinated variety produces thin-skinned fruit that is usually mild when picked young, with occasional hot peppers adding a surprise. Blister whole peppers in olive oil and finish with sea salt.
One-ounce bulk seed bag
Each bag contains 1 oz of seed, approximately 4,130 seeds. Seed counts are estimates and vary by lot. This is seed for planting, not fresh peppers.
Growing Padron peppers
- Botanical name: Capsicum annuum
- Life cycle: Tender annual
- Sun: Full sun
- Soil temperature for germination: 75–85°F
- Sowing depth: ¼ inch
- Germination: Typically 10–14 days under suitable conditions
- Plant height: 18–24 inches
- Plant spacing: 12–18 inches
- Days to maturity: Approximately 60 days
Start indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost. Transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, water consistently, and avoid waterlogged soil.
When to harvest
Pick peppers at about 1–1½ inches long for tender tapas peppers. Heat varies from fruit to fruit and generally increases as peppers mature. Cut fruit from the plant rather than pulling, and harvest frequently to encourage continued production.
